Everything you Need to Know About Braces

Posted: 3rd Sep 2019

About Braces: Did you know that half of Australians admit that they would smile more if they had a charming and beautiful smile? Unfortunately, crooked teeth and chipped teeth are the worst enemies of a beautiful smile. Moreover, a perfectly aligned set of teeth are essential for maintaining optimal oral and physical health. If you want to get rid of your crooked and misaligned teeth, then we have the perfect solution for you at Dental Essence; dental braces. This article explains how dental braces Essendon can give you a beautiful, lasting and a healthy smile.
What are Dental Braces?
Dental braces Essendon are fixed appliances which are attached to the teeth with an adhesive and are used for treating virtually all types of orthodontic problems. The braces, also known as the brackets, contain slots through which a metallic wire passes and encircles all the teeth up till the first or second molars. The orthodontic wire is attached to the teeth by using rubber ties which come in different colors.

Am I a Candidate for Getting Braces?

You can benefit from braces Essendon if you have any of the following orthodontic problems:
⦁ Tooth Crowding – when teeth appear overcrowded or misaligned
⦁ Diastema – when there is excessive space between adjacent teeth
⦁ Overbite – when the upper front teeth excessively overlap the lower teeth
⦁ Underbite – when the upper front teeth close behind the lower ones
⦁ Crossbite – when there is a horizontal misalignment between the teeth

What are Different Types of Braces Used at Dental Essence?

At the Dental Essence, we use two different types of braces Essendon. The conventional metallic and ceramic braces. While the design, method of application and tooth movement is similar for both these braces, they differ in the material with which they are made. Metal braces, as the name suggests are made from a stainless steel alloy. However, many patients object to the anesthetic metallic appearance of these braces. For patients who do not like to wear metal braces, we have ceramic braces, which are white in color. The best thing about these braces is that they perfectly blend in with your teeth and are virtually invisible.

What is the Process of Getting Braces at Dental Essence?

Getting braces Essendon at Dental Essence is a simple and straightforward process.
Examination and Consultation – first, our hygienist will take x-ray images of your teeth and prepare study models. Next, you will have a consultation with our practitioners, who will perform a detailed clinical examination and evaluate x-ray images of your teeth and study models to ascertain whether you are a suitable candidate for getting braces. At this stage, you can discuss any question you might have with our dentist. Before your treatment, we will prepare a detailed treatment plan which is customized according to your dental needs.
Attachment of Braces – during the next appointment, we will apply a mild acid on the front surface of your teeth where the braces will be attached. The acid will demineralize a thin layer of the enamel and facilitate the penetration of the adhesive. The etchant will be washed away after 30 seconds, followed by a thorough drying of the teeth. Next, we will apply an adhesive resin on the prepared tooth surface and then place the bracket over it. The bracket is cemented over the tooth by polymerizing the adhesive using a special LED light. Once the brackets have been bonded to the tooth, a suitable archwire is then passed through the braces and held in position with rubber ties.

How Do Braces work?

⦁ Active Treatment with Braces – The metal wire which passes through the specially designed slots in the braces plays a key role in moving and realigning your teeth. The force generated by the tension in the archwire forces your teeth to move in the desired direction. During your treatment, we will use archwires made of different diameters and materials, ensure that they produce gentle and controlled forces on your teeth. At each visit, we will assess the progress of your treatment, followed by replacement of the rubber ties and the orthodontic wire, if necessary.
⦁ Using the Retainers – once the desired results have been achieved, we will remove the braces and replace them with removable or fixed retainers. The retainers are appliances which are used to consolidate orthodontic treatment and prevent the straightened teeth from moving back into their original position.

How Long will my Orthodontic Treatment Take?

The time required for treating orthodontic problems mainly depends on the severity of the case. For mild to moderate cases, treatment can be completed within 6-9 months. However, for more severe cases, it may take more than 3 years to complete.

What is the Best Time to Seek Orthodontic Treatment?

According to the Australian Dental Association (ADA), the best age for starting orthodontic treatment with braces is around 12, when all the permanent teeth have come out. However, this does not mean that it’s too late for elder individuals. Thanks to modern dentistry, now you can get a set of perfectly aligned teeth with braces Essendon at virtually any age.
